Mawkyrwat

Nestled away in the South West Khasi hills of Meghalaya, 'Mawkyrwat' is one of those out of sight spots that is usually never on the  traveler's list. We heard about the place from a local guy during our visit to 'Cherrapunji'. We decided to head the next day and boy it proved to be the right one. A detour on our way to ' Mawsynram', through the usual scenic settings of Meghalaya , took us to this quaint little town. uncovernortheast!!!

We had carried our own supplies with us (as one should in these remote areas) and had a picnic of our own in the woods. On reaching 'Mawkyrwat' we were surprised that the town seemed completely empty. Not a soul in sight in any direction. We went straight to the 'Traveler's Nest and Restaurant', also known as the 'Tai Resort'.We were blown away by the sheer beauty of this place. (You need to reserve your rooms earlier as the guest house has limited capacity). Set amidst hills and beside a serene expanse of water, it was the ideal place for that getaway stay.

Warm faces and greeting creatures surrounded us as we entered the resort. We were shown to our rooms which were decent enough. Every basic amenities was accounted for in the rooms. We gathered around the balcony and simply gazed at the stunning scenery around us. Acres of lush green fields for as long as we could see and the fresh cool breeze from the lake, transported us to an abode of tranquility.

We ordered for refreshments and chatted through the night. Next morning we headed out to the 'Monolithic Heritage Site' at 'Mawkyrduk'.The place is just 10 minutes drive from the resort. The weather started to gloom a little bit and the landscape turned more green and pure. We were surrounded by rocks on either side of us. We walked up the stairs to reach one of the sites. It's like traveling back in time. The stone pillars formed a sort of ritual ground. It was quite intriguing to see such prehistoric stanchions. As the rain gods started to pour on us, we started to retreat.

On the way back ,we stopped at the village of 'Jakrem'. This tiny hamlet boasts of the natural hot water springs that are found in these parts. As it was raining cats and dogs , we could not scout the area. But if locals are to be believed, it is one of those places you cannot miss. We bid farewell to 'Mawkyrwat' with a promise to definitely come back again, probably on a day in which the sun gods would be smiling rather.
